Dirt Works

My work is about honoring the dirt from underneath us. I have a lot of environmental anxieties about dirt. Polluted with petroleum, lead, plastics, and pesticides our water and soil absorbs our capitalist sin. These elements are essential to the survival of all natural things and deserved to be worshiped as a divine source that gives, forgives, and creates all things. While water is essential to the boundaries of life, Dirt keeps the history of the earth, carries records of species we couldn’t dream of, stores our dead, and feeds our food. I make portraits of the landscape by using what it’s made of. I paint with dirt by making it in to a watercolor. I use water to expose the granulation, tones and undertones of it. I paint with earth. As a painter, and this could probably be said about all fine artist, there is an effort to create a visual langue for the human experience. This work is about having an intimate, worshiping relationship with the dirt.
